Description
Hypothalamic neuropeptide that regulates feeding behavior and significantly augments food intake in a dose-dependent manner when a bolus is administered intracerebroventricularly. After a 48-hour fast, hypothalamic prpro-orexin mRNA level is up-regulated 2.4. The discovery of orexins and their receptors may provide a novel molecular basis for understanding the role of the lateral hypothalamic areas in the regulation of energy homeostasis.
